Dear KGY Families,

Hello everyone! Happy October! We are loving this wonderful playground weather! Our focus this week was communities, what makes up a community and how do we fit in? We said that a community is a place where people live. We talked about the different communities we are a part of- Willow Brook community, our neighborhoods, etc... Next week, we’ll learn about living versus nonliving things.

Thank you to all who added a recipe for our KGY cook book! We are in the process of putting it together.
Monday-
Shared Reading- We introduced the word community. We have important jobs and people in our communities. We read the book A Day at the Police Station and the students wrote about a rule they think is important to the community.
Interactive Writing- We added to our chart about what we need from our friends, family and community. We need our community to be safe, peaceful and we want people to help each other. We will see there are connections between what we want from each group!
Phonics/Poetry- “Hey Diddle Diddle” -we reread our previous poems and knew this was fiction because the cow could never jump over the moon. We found rhyming words and sang the rhymes in different voices and different volumes.
Math- We talked about characteristics of shapes- circles have no corners or sides etc... and we played a feely bag game. Children reached into the feely bag and picked out a shape. Then they had to find a matching shape just by feeling the shapes. We loved this game!
Tuesday- (K teachers had an assessment workshop- sub day)
Shared Reading- We read Jobs People Do. We talked about the important jobs that people do in our community.
Interactive/independent writing- Students wrote what THEIR job is in the community- they are a student as well as helping out at home.
Phonics- We matched pictures with things that rhyme.
Math- The students played a dice rolling game. They rolled a die and matched the number in the die with a number on their paper and colored in that number. When they colored in all their numbers they won. Matching the dots on the die with the number symbol can be tricky- they did really well!

Wednesday-
Writer’s Workshop- We continued writing stories- we practiced using the ABC charts to help write sounds we hear in our words. The students are doing a great job as writers! We LOVE visiting our author’s chair!
Reader’s Theater- Students acted out jobs we see in our communities. This is one of our favorite things to do! We have GOOD actors in KGY!
Phonics/Poetry- “Hey Diddle Diddle”- We focused on concepts about print- touch read the words, followed along with the pointer, and found words out of order.
Shared Reading- Jobs People Do - We talked more about community helpers and important people and places in our community.
Math- We made a KGY obstacle course! (practicing directional words!) We put a pillow on our heads, we went through chairs and over obstacles and under tables- yes, this was a hit!

Thursday-
Today we listened to The Career Alphabet on a CD. It was about everything we can be from A to Z. We brainstormed and wrote a list together of want we want to be when we grow up. We worked really hard on saying our words slowly and over and over to listen for sounds. We then wrote independently at our seats.
Phonics- We talked about using spaces. We wrote sentences about what we like to do in Kindergarten. We focused on using a capital to start, spaces, and using a period. We then gave the students typed sentences that they had to cut apart and put back together! This was a little hard!
Shared Reading- Peter’s Chair We predicted what this book was about by looking at the cover and by reading the first page. We did a lot of partner sharing to discuss the beginning, middle, and end of this book! We discussed the main character and his feelings!
Math- Calendar- Our new thing in daily calendar is to look up the actual temperature online and record it with our days at school growing number line. We have fun doing this.
In Math today we played Spin a Number. We had fun spinning the paper clips and counting spaces on a game board with our partners! Have you played a board game at home lately?

Friday-
Today we read The Relatives Came. We talked about what the word relative means. We also had a Writer’s Workshop lesson on making lists. We talked about when we might need to make a list. You might let your child add(write) an item to your grocery list this week. The children wrote some amazing lists about what they need for a birthday party, favorite cars, favorite foods, songs, for a trip, etc. We worked on thinking about what the list could be about, writing a beginning sound down for our words, and spelling the best we can. We practice saying the word we are spelling very slowly over and over. We also talk about syllables and try to spell parts of words this way.
Shared Reading- The Bag I’m Taking to Grandma’s We enjoyed this rebus style story and liked this boy’s picture list of things he needed to go to Grandma’s! We also worked on rhyming words like in the story. We had fun playing a rhyming picture game.
Math-
We played Spin a Number again this morning. This afternoon we played a version of this outside by making huge numbers with sidewalk chalk and taking turns counting our spots out! It was so much fun!
