ST. LOUIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA - POWELL SYMPHONY HALL
Willow Brook's 3rd graders attended a performance of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra October 14, 2008. Each year the Symphony offers a series of concerts specifically for young people. In the opulent setting of St. Louis' own Powell Hall, Willow Brook kids are treated to a feast for both the eyes and the ears. Family concerts are available for greatly reduced ticket prices on weekends, and the SLSO's outreach program finds free chamber ensemble concerts across the St. Louis area. FLORISSANT CIVIC CENTER THEATRE -
Willow Brook's 4th Graders annually attend a musical matinee performance of professional theatre companies such as New York-based children's theatre company "THEATREWORKS." Student learn vocabulary and make some predictions about how the actors would creatively bring the story to life on stage.
This year they will attend "Stinky Cheese Man" on February 18, 2009. The cost will be $4.00 per ticket.
The Junior League of St. Louis helps brings this Family Theatre Series to audiences each year. For more offerings visit the Florissant Civic Center Theatre Website.
ST. LOUIS BALLET - WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY - EDISON THEATRE
Willow Brook's 5th graders annually attend a ballet performance. A study of of Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" is also explored. "It is the first time in two years that Willow Brook students will have an opportunity to see something like this," said Mrs. Pasley.
As funding for the arts grows more scarce, the number of opportunities for students to attend events like this becomes more challenging. Not only are the ticket costs rising, ($4.00 in 2003 up to $7.00 in 2006) but there are fewer ballet companies in town. "For many years we attended the Gateway Ballet's performance, and they had to discontinue their holiday series. We tried to get tickets for the St. Louis Ballet performances last year, and they were all sold out! I am thrilled this year's class of 5th graders will get to go," Pasley said in 2007.
